About Department

Department of Physics was established in 1968 with an ambition to cater to the demand of people of Punjab, particularly Malwa region. Since the time of its establishment, this department has made glorious achievements to its credit. Physics, being a fundamental subject helps to understand the other subjects. Thus, this subject is also essential and integral part of the syllabus of the undergraduate courses.

Facilities in Physics Department

Laboratory

There are two spacious fully equipped labs with semi smart teaching techniques. One lab is attached with darkroom. Virtual lab facility is also provided to the students.

Departmental Library

In order to meet the urgent requirement of books, department has its own library. There are 350 books in our library. Books are issued to the needy and intelligent students for whole session.

Exclusive Equipments

Physics department has large number of equipments to cater the requirement of experiments prescribed in the syllabus .The important instruments to enrich the experimental skills of students are Scintillation Counter, G.M. Counters, Hall Effect apparatus, Four Probe Method apparatus, He-Ne Lasers and Susceptibility of Ferric Chloride.

Session 2021-2022
Physics department had many achievements to be proud of and many activities involving staff and students in the academic year 2021-2022 under the leadership of Mrs. Sarbdeep Kaur Sidhu, and Ms. Akashdeep Kaur.
DEPARTMENTAL ACTIVITIES
  • Department of Physics of the college organized ONLINE NATIONAL LEVEL INTER-COLLEGE Poster Making Competition on the theme "PHYSICS IN SPACE TECHNOLOGY" in collaboration with IQAC on 2nd June, 2021 in which a total of 40 students of different colleges from all over the country participated and Jaskiran Kaur of B.Sc. III NM bagged III prize
  • Online National level Poster Presentation competition was organized by Dept. of Physics,LPU, Punjab in association with IAPT on the occasion of "Einstein Nobel Prize Centenary Year" for the discovery of "PHOTOELECTRIC EFFECT" on 16th, 17th June, 2021 in which Osheen Kapoor (B.Sc. II NM) of the college bagged III position and Jaskiran Kaur (B.Sc. III NM) secured 4th.
  • GCG, Ludhiana organized a state-level online event "HAPPINESS MARKET" on 24th June, 2021 in which Mrs. Sarbdeep Kaur Sidhu (HOD Physics) received "Certificate of Appreciation" and Jaskiran Kaur (B.Sc. III NM) bagged consolation prize out of 42 students.
  • Department of Physics, Mathematics & IQAC in collaboration with IAPT (RC2) organized "NATIONAL E-WORKSHOP" on the theme "LEARN PHYSICS & MATHEMATICS PRACTICALLY" on 17th June, 2021. Dr. Jaswinder Singh (Shiksha Ratan). A total of 650 students & teachers from all over the country participated in this workshop.
  • Khushi Jindal &Osheen Kapoor (B.Sc. III NM) participated in IAPT NCEWP-2021 on 24th& 26th Sept. 2021 respectively.
  • Under the guidance of Mrs. Sarbdeep Kaur Sidhu & Mrs. Akashdeep Kaur, three students of the college participated in (SAVE MOTHER EARTH) Declamation, Slogan and Poster Making Competition held at KCW, Sidhwan Khurd on 30th Oct. 2021. Ms. Jashanpreet Kaur of B.Sc. II Medical got second prize in the declamation contest.
  • Students of B.Sc. I,II,III delivered seminars on various topics during the session.

  • Mrs. Sarbdeep Kaur Sidhu,Miss Amandeep Kaur& Mrs. Akashdeep Kaur participated in National level FDP organized by Dept. of Physics, St. Mary's college Toothukudi (TN) sponsored by DBT from 12TH July 21 TO 17TH July 21
  • Mrs. Sarbdeep Kaur Sidhu participated and presented a paper (Renewable Energy Resources & its types) in 3 days online international conference on Environment & Sustainable development in POST COVID 19 through SDGs held on 3rd to 5thJune 2021organised by SESD New Delhi.

  • Sarbdeep Kaur Sidhu, Ms. Amandeep Kaur Matharoo & Ms. Akashdeep Kaur attended one-day workshop on “Online Teaching: Tools and Techniques” on June 20, 2020 by Prof. Tejinderpal Singh, P.U. Chd.
  • Sarbdeep Kaur Sidhu & Ms. Amandeep Kaur Matharoo participated in the Webinar on topic “Career opportunities for Physics students after Graduation” organized by the Department of Physics, Vivekananda College, Tiruvedakam West, Madurai, Tamil Nadu on June 22, 2020.
  • Undergraduate students of the college participated in “Online Physics Intelligence Test PIT-2020” organized by Post Graduate Department of Physics of Dev Samaj College for Women, Ferozepur on 25th June, 2020.
  • Mehargurvir Singh (B.Sc. III NM) scored 46/50, Manmeet Kaur (B.Sc. III NM) scored 30/50 and Khushi Jindal (B.Sc. I NM) scored 40/50 marks in this test.
  • Sarbdeep Kaur Sidhu attended the online training programme on the theme “Managing Virtual classroom and Online teaching” organized by DCDC, Panjab University, Chandigarh on 3rd and 4th July 2020.
  • Mehagurvir Singh of B.Sc. III NM participated in Essay writing competition conducted by IAPT (NCEWP-2020) on the topic “Pollution in our Community: Measurements & Physical insights”.
  • Amandeep Kaur Matharoo & Ms. Akashdeep Kaur got e- certificates on completion of a short course on “Learn to design your own Solar Home System” on 30th August, 2020 as a part of Energy Literacy Drive of the Energy Swaraj Foundation in association with Janardan Rai Nagar, Rajasthan Vidyapeeth.

  • Sarbdeep Kaur Sidhu was invited as a Resource person in the Extension lecture organized by SD College for Women, Moga on the topic “General Awareness regarding Pollution Control” on 2nd December, 2020.

Course Outcomes
  1. To produce graduates who understand the concepts and significance of various physical phenomena.
  2. To bridge the gap between theory and problem solving by enhancing student’s capability of dealing with real time problems.
  3. To enhance the practical skills of the students by the utilization of their theoretical knowledge in practical experiments.

Subject Outcomes
  1. To understand basic concepts and to practice problem solving by using selected problems in solid state physics, Mechanics and Vibration and waves.
  2. To learn the mathematical tools needed to solve quantum mechanics problems.
  3. To acquire knowledge in the content areas of nuclear and particle physics, facilitating informed decisions as students pursue research projects, internships and graduate study.
  4. To understand how statistics of the microscopic world can be used to explain the thermal features of the macroscopic world.
  5. To be able to use thermal and statistical principles in a wide range of applications.
  6. To understand how major concepts developed and changed over time and enlighten students with the various applications of electronics in modern era.
  7. To enhance the practical skills of the students by the utilization of their theoretical knowledge of Electronics, Solid state physics, Nuclear physics, Optics in various practical and real time experiments.

  • Physics Quiz: Three students accompanied by Ms. Amandeep Kaur Matharoo from the department participated in Inter-College Physics Quiz held at SCD Government College, Ludhiana on 25th Sept, 2019. The team performed very well.
  • Poster presentation: Jaskiran Kaur, student of B.Sc. II NM got first prize in Inter-College Poster presentation on the topic “Contribution of Physics to society” in Science fiesta-III organized by the college on 21st Oct 2019.
  • Working Model: The students (Parvinder Kaur and Kavita) of B.Sc. III NM prepared a working model on “Eco-friendly house” in Science fiesta-III under the guidance of faculty members and they got first prize.
  • Sarbdeep Kaur Sidhu participated in workshop on the theme “Developments and Innovations in Experimental Physics and Allied Concepts” organized by KCW, Ludhiana and IAPT held on 2nd Nov., 2019.
  • Undergraduate students of the college appeared in National Graduate Physics Examination (NGPE) conducted by Indian Association of Physics Teachers (IAPT) held at our college on 19th January, 2020.
  • Undergraduate students of the college participated in the various events of PHY EXPO-2020 held at Hans Raj Mahila Maha Vidhyala, Jalandhar on 11th February, 2020. All the participants performed exceptionally well.
  • Kavita and Parvinder Kaur of B.Sc. III NM got Second prize in Working Model competition.
  • Yashika, Amanpreet Kaur & Mehargurvir Singh of B.Sc. III NM attained first position in Physics Quiz.
  • Mehargurvir Singh of B.Sc. III NM got first prize in Essay Writing competition.
  • Jaskiran Kaur (B.Sc. II NM) and Gursimran Kaur (B.Sc. III NM) got Second prize in Poster presentation.
  • Osheen Kapoor and Charvi of  B.Sc. I NM got Consolidation prize in Poster presentation.
  • National Science Day was celebrated in the college by Physics Department on 28th February, 2020. On this occasion, “Sir C. V. Raman Physics Society” was inaugurated.  Events such as Poster Presentation, Power Point Presentation, Poem recitation, were organized to mark the discovery of “Raman Effect” and enlighten students with contribution of Science to our society.
Session 2018-19
  • A workshop on “Experimental Physics and Virtual Lab” was organized by the department on 21st Feb 2019. The resource persons were Dr. Jaswinder Singh (National state awardee) and Prof. Baldev Singh Sidhu.
  • An extension lecture by Dr. Rajeev Sharma (Assistant Professor, PAU, Ludhiana) on “Mysterious Universe: Microscopic and Macroscopic view” was also organized by the department on 22nd Feb 2019.
Recreational & Educational Trips
  • A group of 55 students of B.Sc. II Non Medical visited Shri Anandpur Sahib and Naina Devi on 2nd March 2019 and a group of 63 students of B.Sc. III Non Medical visited Kasauli on 14th March, 2019 under the supervision of faculty members.
  • A group of 60 students of B.Sc. I Non Medical visited Pushpa Gujral Science city, Kapurthala on 28th March 2019 under the supervision of faculty members. The students got an opportunity to study the following areas of science:
