DBT Star College Programme

Star College Scheme as launched by the Department of Biotechnology, Ministry of Science & Technology, Government of India, and New Delhi to support and promote undergraduate science education across the country. Our college bagged the Star Status from DBT in the year 2015. Four science departments (Botany, Chemistry, Zoology and Physics) are benefitted from this scheme for strengthening the academic, physical infrastructure, teaching and for achieving excellence in skill based hands on training.

Through this programme Interdisciplinary approach is adopted by all departments and the college also organizes Inter-Departmental awareness generation Activities like exhibitions, seminars, Lecture series and workshops for teachers and students of other colleges and schools. Our College organizes a two day mega event “Science Fiesta” every year to spread awareness about role of science and technology in today's world and to inculcate the scientific aptitude among young students.

To accomplish this purpose, an INTERSCHOOL and INTERCOLLEGE competitions i.e. Poster-presentation, Rangoli, Power-point presentations, innovative writing, speech competitions, Still and Working Models etc. are organised. Quiz contest/workshop, Popular Lecture Series for School and college are conducted by the college.

We arrange a number of educational tours to acquaint them with outer modern world. They are also taken to the other universities and research labs for interaction with the scientists and to acquaint them with the modern techniques being used to study the different aspects of sciences.

Minor research projects and assignments are given to students at undergraduate and post graduate level in the subjects of Chemistry, Physics, Botany, Biochemistry and Zoology to inculcate the scientific aptitude among the young students. The college aims to continue its distinctive endeavors in this direction to achieve in some research and its applications in diverse fields of relevance and social utility.

The faculty members are encouraged to participate in various Faculty improvement activities such as training courses, seminars and workshops to enhance their knowledge.

Impact Of The Scheme

We are being supported by DBT under STAR COLLEGE SCHEME since 2009. The DBT has enabled us to upgrade the laboratories and libraries for students hailing from the rural areas of Punjab. The qualitative performance of the students has improved exponentially. The number of students securing above 80% has increased from 3 in 2008-09 to 55 in 2018. With the financial support from DBT we could:

  1. Arrange two National Conferences.
  2. Invite 80 Dignitaries to the college to deliver lecture and motivate our students.
  3. Organise 14 workshops for hands on training.
  4. Arrange 46 educational tours to field, research labs and universities.
  5. Hold 6 lecture series.
  6. Organise an innovative Inter college competitive event: Science Fiesta I 2016, Interschool and Inter college competitive event Science Fiesta-II, February 2019. And Science Fiesta III October 2019.
  7. Quality of teaching is enhanced with the addition of MIPS, OHP, Computers, projectors etc. for delivering Lectures and Seminars.

All these events provide a platform to the students to interact with the scientists to widen the horizon of their knowledge. This has generated interest among the students to pursue science as career. The teachers have been equally benefitted.
